We are building in Betty's Bay right now. Our yard is in Gordon's Bay, straight up Clarence Drive, and we take work along this coast as far as Hermanus.
The ground here
Most of what makes a plot here difficult is underneath it. The boulders you can see on the surface are the top of what is down there, and plenty of them sit exactly where a house wants to go. They do not get dug out like soil. They have to be broken up and moved, and that happens before a single footing can be set.
We are doing it at House de Stadler as we speak, and it was most of the earthworks on that job. It is the part that catches people out on this coast, because it is invisible when you walk the plot and it is expensive once you start.
If you have a stand here and you are not sure what is under it, we will come and stand on it with you. There is no charge for that, and you will get a straight answer either way.

Betty's Bay sits in fynbos, and a site that has been flattened for the convenience of the builder never settles back into this landscape. We keep what the build allows us to keep, and we plan the access and the lay-down area around it rather than the other way round.
The same wind and salt air that make this coast worth living on are what a house here has to stand in for the next thirty years. It shows up in the choices, and it is worth making those choices deliberately rather than discovering them later.
None of this is exotic. It is simply what building on this stretch of coast asks for, and it is why local knowledge is worth something here.
